Tests confirm no risk to Tokerau Beach users

Warning signs at Tokerau Beach will be removed today after water tests confirmed there is no longer a risk to beach users from a wastewater spill caused by broken pipeline.

Warning signs at Tokerau Beach will be removed today after water tests confirmed there is no longer a risk to beach users from a wastewater spill caused by broken pipeline.

A collapsed pipe support located in dense bush resulted in the pipeline breaking on Monday evening (26 February), causing wastewater to spill into a stream. Sucker trucks were immediately called in to transfer waste away from the pipeline, which was temporarily repaired by 10pm that night. Permanent repairs were completed the following day.

Water samples taken at Tokerau Beach on Wednesday (28 February) show there is no risk to beachgoers from the spill. Warning signs erected at the beach by Far North Waters, the council’s three waters alliance partner, will be removed today.
