Provisional list of candidates leaves no gaps

As the deadline arrived at midday today (Friday 1 August) for candidates to submit their nominations to stand in the local elections, 64 people had successfully registered their interest. That is 24 more candidates than at 4pm yesterday, leaving no roles without candidates standing in them. Any vacant positions would have prompted a by-election. This is now unlikely to be necessary.

However, it is important to remember that the candidate list remains provisional and may change. That is because the final and confirmed list of nominees will not be known until Wednesday 6 August when all candidate information has been checked and possible technical issues resolved.

Those 64 provisional candidates will be vying for 30 roles available to represent the Far North District Council. Three candidates are taking a tilt at the mayoralty. They are:

  • Ann Court
  • Joshua Riley
  • Moko Tepania.

A list of all other candidates who have completed their nominations to stand in the October local election is available on our website.

Each potential candidate must be nominated on the correct nomination paper. Anyone standing for local body elections must be a New Zealand citizen, over 18 years old and be on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll. They must also be nominated by two people who are enrolled on the Parliamentary Electoral Roll in the area they intend to stand in.

Communities interested in hosting a ‘meet the candidate’ event can find contact details of candidates who have made their details public from Wednesday 6 August when the final list of candidates is expected to be available. If you are hosting an event for all mayoral, councillor or community board candidates please contact elections@fndc.govt.nz to discuss promoting it on our website.
