Far North Kahika pays tribute to Māori king
Far North Mayor Kahika Moko Tepania has paid tribute to Māori king Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII who has died aged 69.
A Kiingitanga spokesperson confirmed Kiingi Tuheitia had passed away peacefully on Friday morning surrounded by family.
The king had been in hospital recovering from heart surgery, just days after celebrating the 18th anniversary of his coronation.
Kahika Tepania was fortunate to meet Kiingi Tūheitia on several occasions and the Kiingitanga attended this year's Waitangi Day event.
“Moe mai rā e Kīngi Tūheitia, e okioki atu rā ki tua o te ārai. The Far North acknowledges the passing of a great Māori leader, and our thoughts are with Te Kāhui Ariki and the Kīngitanga at this time," says Kahika Tepania.
Far Northerners who would like to pay their respects to acknowledge the passing of Kiingi Tūheitia are asked to meet at Te Māhurehure Marae in Auckland at 6pm on Sunday 1 September. A delegation from Te Tai Tokerau will travel to Tūrangawaewae Marae on Monday 2 September.
As a mark of respect, the New Zealand flag is being flown at half-mast at Far North District Council's Kaikohe headquarters.
