The Strand traffic trial update

The traffic trial on The Strand in Kororāreka / Russell will officially end on 1 September 2025.

At its July meeting, the council decided to make the trial changes permanent. This means:

• From mid-block Cass Street to the northern boat ramp, The Strand will remain a shared space for vehicles and pedestrians.
• The southern end of The Strand will remain pedestrian priority with access for essential vehicles.
• The temporary changes in Cass Street will stay in place until a permanent design is completed.

As part of the decision, the planters and barrels near Russell Fresh will be removed to improve access to the mobility car park.

The permanent design for Cass Street and The Strand will take some time to complete. Until then, the temporary layout will remain in place. When the design work is ready, it will be shared with the community for feedback before being installed.
