A major project to improve access to the historically significant Ruapekapeka Pā from State Highway 1 was officially celebrated this morning by Te Ruapekapeka Trust, the Department of Conservation, hapū, contracting companies and Far North District Council.
The project sealed a total of 5.3km of Ruapekapeka Road and installed eco-friendly, sustainable paving to protect the roots of large puriri trees at the pā site entrance. The project, completed a year ago, included road widening, drainage works, road shaping and corner corrections.
Today’s event also saw the signing of a new three-year Te Ruapekapeka Pā and battle site strategic action plan by Te Ruapekapeka Trust, the Department of Conservation and hapū representatives. A key goal of the new action plan is to attract visitors to the site by erecting a series of pou at the intersection with State Highway 1. Goals of the first action plan included sealing Ruapekapeka Road and improved parking at the Pā site.
