Benefits and opportunities

Come and live a healthy work/life balance in the Far North where you can enjoy the lifestyle that Northland has to offer – fishing, diving, hiking or just relaxing on one of the many beaches; while being relatively close to Whangarei, where you get all a big city has to offer.

We lead the way in creating better workplaces for our staff in a variety of areas.

  • Remote/hybrid working
  • Increased benefits by adopting law changes before they become mandatory

Development opportunities

We have a learning culture where your professional development plan is sustained throughout your career. A range of options for training and improvement are accessible, such as an online library, e-learning opportunities, external and internal courses, secondments and mentoring. Our workforce is supported in ongoing learning and capability to better:

  • Plan and develop a well thought-out career path.
  • Improve both personal and professional competencies.
  • Engage and thrive in meaningful work.

Education assistance

We recognise and value the importance of professional accreditation and development.  We support relevant learning activities through a range of leave and funding options.

Leadership development

Leadership in FNDC is a proven career path. Experiential learning takes place at all levels within the organisation; through projects, secondments and our in-house Tō Taumata  leadership programme.

Tō Taumata focuses on learner-centred goals and outcomes, which are aligned to FNDC strategic priorities.

All of which provides FNDC with a robust succession planning framework, providing opportunity for aspirational leaders.

Diversity and inclusion

Far North District Council serves a highly diverse community. We include people of many faiths, ethnicities, sexual orientations and abilities. To acknowledge that and to ensure we serve our customers with understanding and empathy, we offer staff development workshops that focus on Diversity Awareness, Disability Awareness and New Zealand Sign Language.

We think it is equally important to recognise and celebrate the diversity we have within our own organisation. A diverse workforce offers many points of view and opinions. Embracing that in our day-to-day interactions with each other helps us make better decisions and provide better services to our customers.

Flexible & remote/hybrid working

We actively encourage a work/life balance.  Flexible working hours may be an option you can consider while you’re working at Council. Some positions may be suited to hybrid remote working, while embracing a customer first concept.  Our driver is to work smarter not harder, and using technology to help achieve that goal.  A working rhythm can be generated that best suits you, your people leader and our customers.

Health and wellbeing

Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)

We realise that sometimes employees benefit from personal guidance so we offer employee assistance in the form of private and confidential counselling services. This can be accessed by all employees, and includes their direct family members.

We also recognise the importance of managing people, so in addition to the staff EAP service, we have a Manager Helpline that can be accessed to provide advice during those interactions.  EAP is also fully online and available as a mobile phone app to all staff.

Wellbeing advocates

We have trained Wellbeing Advocates who are available to support other staff. They act as an initial contact point providing guidance and advice on external services about issues relating to wellbeing, including domestic violence, bullying, mental/physical health and inappropriate behaviour at work.

Flu jabs

You will be offered free flu vaccines annually and encouraged to take advantage of this service.
