Communities around the world are already leading the way. From implementing green infrastructure to developing early warning systems, people are planning to adapt to the changing environment.

Community Adaptation Projects

Council will start engagement mid-2024 for community adaptation projects in the North and South Hokianga subdivisions and the southern half of the Kaitaia subdivision.

Area selection is based of on a evidence-based approach using detailed risk and vulnerability analyses of hazards and climate change impacts.

The Process of Adaptation - Dynamic Adaptive Pathway Planning

Dynamic Adaptive Pathway Planning (DAPP) is a strategic approach to address the challenges posed by climate change. Unlike static plans, DAPP recognizes the evolving nature of climate impacts and adapts strategies accordingly. It involves continuous monitoring of climate-related changes and the flexibility to adjust plans in response to new information. DAPP integrates a range of possible future scenarios, allowing for adaptive decision-making that considers uncertainties. This approach acknowledges that the impacts of climate change are dynamic and multifaceted, requiring ongoing assessment and adjustment of strategies to ensure resilience and sustainability in the face of changing conditions.

How can Council help?

Council can play a role in supporting communities with Dynamic Adaptive Pathway Planning (DAPP) projects. We can engage residents through awareness campaigns, provide technical expertise and resources for climate risk assessments, and integrate adaptive strategies into local planning. Financial support and collaborative platforms for stakeholders can further enhance community-driven DAPP initiatives. By fostering collaboration and inclusivity, the council will contribute to building resilience and ensuring effective climate adaptation at the local level.
