Moerewa stormwater improvements hit halfway mark

A project to improve stormwater infrastructure in Moerewa hit the halfway mark in April.

Almost 300m of new pipework has been installed along Plunket Street, as well as cesspits and three megapits to improve drainage there. Council contractors have now moved works to Pembroke Street.

Two severe storm events, in July 2015 and July 2020, resulted in widespread flooding across the Moerewa / Ōtiria township area inundating houses, garages, sections and roads for several days. The severity of this flooding resulted in the need for network improvements to better service landlocked low-lying areas currently serviced by a soakage network with limited and variable capacity .

As well as the infrastructure improvements, local contractors estimate the economic benefit to the local community from delivering the works currently exceeds $11,000 for local businesses, cafes and through employment opportunities.

The project is progressing on time and within the budget allocated in the Long Term Plan, with a total expected construction cost of $1.9 million.
