Bay of Islands Swordfish Club secures major tournament for new venue

Just months after the grand opening of its new clubhouse in Ōpua, the Bay of Islands Swordfish Club has secured a major new event for the venue: the inaugural CMP Billfish Classic.

The high-profile fishing competition is scheduled for February 2027, and already subscriptions have reached more than half of the 100 boats allowed.

That’s not all for the new clubhouse, which has hosted several large events since Prime Minister Christopher Luxon opened it in February this year. He cut the ribbon alongside key members of the community, including representatives from local iwi Ngāti Manu, the former Deputy Leader of the Labour Party, Kelvin Davis, and Judge Greg Davis.

The club’s manager, Ross Brljevich, says the venue, perched on the water’s edge at Bay of Islands Marina, has maintained a busy calendar. “We’ve hosted the Mainstream Reel Ladies Tournament and ITM Fishing Tournament, bringing in hundreds of participants. These annual favourites will return next year, and our Thursday members' nights are already a local favourite.”

“The venue’s become a real community hub and a go-to for special occasions thanks to its unique waterfront setting.”

To keep the momentum going, Ross says plans are underway for an extended outdoor area with a covered marquee to offer a flexible, year-round event space.

Far North Holdings Limited, the commercial arm of the Far North District Council, owns and operates the Bay of Islands Marina. Chris Galbraith, General Manager of Maritime at Far North Holdings Limited, says, “The new clubhouse is already a vital addition to the events and facilities on offer for locals and visitors. It’s a strong start for the Swordfish Club in Ōpua.”
