Proposed district plan timeline
Timeline overview
The current District Plan review process was initiated in 2016. A key part of that review process was undertaken in 2022 when we formally notified the Proposed District Plan and called for submissions. We received 580 submissions that raised thousands of requests to be considered.
We then provided an opportunity for landowners, tangata whenua, the wider community, and stakeholders to tell us whether they support or oppose what was requested in those original submissions. We still have several steps to complete before adopting a new District Plan. These are shown below.

Decisions on the PDP
On the 11 June the Far North District Council has approved the release of its decisions on submissions to the Proposed District Plan (PDP).
What happens next?
The process now moves to:
- Notification of decisions
Following Council decisions, submitters will be notified, along with the public of Council’s decisions on 30 June 2026. - Appeals
After the notification of decisions there is a 30 working day period for submitters to appeal
Important things to know
- There will be no change to how planning rules are applied or how applications are assessed between now and 30 June. Both the PDP and Operative Far North District Plan 2009 (ODP) continue to be treated in the same way as they did before the council made its decision.
- If you have any questions, please contact the District Plan team on 0800 920 029 or pdp@fndc.govt.nz
- Further information and tools will be released after Council notifies decisions
