Community cohesion and whānau connection celebrated by community boards
Community events that provide opportunities for whānau to connect, enjoy local entertainment, and celebrate this festive season and beyond were the focus of funding approvals by Far North community boards at their November meetings.
Ngā Anahera Pākiri Bald Angels, a charity that supports vulnerable children and families, received funding from all three community boards for its annual Christmas kai project, which ensures local whānau in need get to enjoy a special meal together during the holiday season. The charity aims to reach 400 whānau, including between 1200 and 1500 taitamariki, with this initiative.
There will also be more opportunities for the community to gather at Christmas events thanks to the community boards. This includes the Far North Christmas in the Sky event in Kaitāia, which received $6000 from the Te Hiku Community Board. The Moerewa Christmas in the Park event, on Thursday 11 December, received $5000 from the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board. Both events will offer inclusive celebrations featuring entertainment, kai, and activities for tamariki and the wider community.
Other events that inspire community cohesion and support local businesses that are on the calendar for next year include:
- Mangōnui Waterfront Festival in March 2026, received $5495 from Te Hiku Community Board
- Cruz’n the Bayz in March 2026, received $5000 from the Bay of Islands-Whangaroa Community Board
- Pawarenga United Marae Sports Day Committee event in December 2025, received $5000 from the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board.
