Additions enhance Kaitāia’s Te Ahu loop walk

Seats, rubbish bins, bollards and lighting have been added to Kaitāia’s Te Ahu loop walk, a 1.8km trail along the Awanui River that connects Te Ahu Centre with the soon-to-be-opened Te Hiku sports hub.

Seats, rubbish bins, bollards and lighting have been added to Kaitāia’s Te Ahu loop walk, a 1.8km trail along the Awanui River that connects Te Ahu Centre with the soon-to-be-opened Te Hiku sports hub.

The concrete shared fitness and recreation trail includes wide paths with an easy gradient suitable for a range of activities such as cycling, scooters, skateboarding, pushchairs, wheelchairs, running and walking.

Two types of seating have been installed – benches that provide viewing options of either the river or playing fields, and standard wooden park benches with seat backs and arms for extra support. These benches are mounted onto concreate pads directly linked to the pathway to ensure easy access for those with pushchairs, wheelchairs, and walkers.

Te Hiku o Te Ika Open Spaces Revitalisation Masterplan Working Group liaised with council contractor, Recreational Services, to ensure new stainless-steel rubbish bins installed beside sports fields can be regularly emptied so spectators can help keep the fields tidy. Bollards have also been installed at Te Hiku sports hub carpark to prevent vehicle access to the pathway.

The new additions were added last month after long delays caused by extended lead times and supply issues.

Te Hiku o te Ika Revitilisation Masterplan Working Group is also funding installation of new cricket nets now underway adjacent to the sports hub. This will be followed by exercise stations along Te Ahu loop walk. Those additions will be completed soon. Te Hiku Masterplan Working Group aims to complete all Te Hiku revitalisation projects by the end of February 2023.
