Design work for Stage 1 work on Te Puāwaitanga — Bay of Islands Sports Hub is now complete and negotiations with contractors is well advanced. The council was granted resource consent for the project late last month and last week erected a giant roadside billboard showing designs of the sports facility at the State Highway 10 entrance to the site.

Stage 1 construction work will include building four sports fields, toilets, changing facilities and parking for over 300 vehicles. Road access to the 46.77-hectare site from the highway has already been completed.

This complex will cater for football, league, gymnastics, hockey, softball, cricket, and croquet. There is also consent for a dog training area.

Development will be undertaken in three stages. Stage 1 of the project is funded by a $2 million Provincial Growth Fund grant and $2m from the council.

The council has been working with a project working group on the hub's development since October 2020. The working group includes iwi, sporting code representatives, councillors, and council staff.

More information about the sports hub can be found on our website.
