Cycle ‘hub’ at Pioneer Village with trust move
A move by the trust that manages the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail will create a cycle 'hub' at Kaikohe's Pioneer Village.
A new buzz of cycling activity is expected at the Pioneer Village in Kaikohe now that the trust managing Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail has moved its headquarters there.
The 87km cycle trail runs from Ōpua in the Bay of Islands on the east coast to the Hokianga Harbour on the west coast. Cyclists buzzing into Kaikohe, a main access point for a section of the trail, can now take advantage of a ‘hub’ atmosphere at the village which also provides a café, secure bike stands, WiFi access and toilets.
Operating from a cabin at the village, the new location allows trust staff to interact more easily with trail users, helping to better understand their needs and to continue supporting them with information on the trail, local amenities and attractions.
The trust’s General Manager, Tracy Dalton, says having a one-stop-shop for trail services enables visitors to get the most out of their experience of the Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail.
“We are thrilled that the team at Pioneer Village have allowed us to have a base on-site and support our vision of creating a cycling visitor hub in Kaikohe.”
‘Hub’ visitors will also be encouraged to check out the Pioneer Village attractions which include a museum and guided tours recounting the stories of first contact between Māori and Europeans in the area.
Signage at trail access points in Kaikohe now direct users to the Pioneer Village, located near the Kaikohe town centre, not far from the trust's previous location on Kaikohe’s main street, Broadway.
Pou Herenga Tai Twin Coast Cycle Trail is a key attraction for visitors to Tai Tokerau and locals alike, with many residents regularly walking and cycling the trail. The cycle trail is one of the 23 Great Rides of Aotearoa New Zealand. Cycling has had a surge in popularity since the COVID-19 lockdowns and riding New Zealand’s cycle trails has become a popular visitor experience.
