Singer’s funding bid hits the right note

A musician’s aim to support those affected by addiction has struck the right chord with the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board.

A musician’s aim to support those affected by addiction has struck the right chord with the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board.

At its meeting on Wednesday 2 August, the board approved $1500 for Far North singer-songwriter Shane Watts – also known as SAW – who uses some of the profits from his music to help the fight against methamphetamine use and addiction.

The musician from Kaikohe is now getting radio time in New Zealand and with the royalties from his music, he will help families of methamphetamine addicts with the cost of accommodation, travel, and kai as part of the recovery process. The funding will go towards recording more music.

The community board also agreed to give $1000 towards the Onam 2023 celebration organised by the Kerala Indian community. The event in Kaikohe on Tuesday 29 August marks the beginning of the New Year according to the Malayalam calendar.

In its funding application, the group says the celebration involves traditional food, costumes and games, and is a chance to share cultural values. The Kerala Indian community has around 50 members in the Far North between Kaikohe and Kerikeri.
