Taipā kids upskill in real life revitalisation
A project to revitalise the Taipā beachfront is giving local Year 9 students a chance to get hands on experience in project design and delivery.
Taipā Area School students are being offered a chance to have a deep understanding of a project to revitalise the Taipā beachfront. The course runs every week for three hours from July to September and will give the Year 9 students hands on experience in project design and delivery with a real-world example that impacts them, their whānau and their community.
During the course, students will meet with elected members and technical specialists to engage in mini projects related to the revitalisation of the Taipā waterfront. The students will then present their findings to special guests at an event to be held at the end of the course.
Revitalisation of the Taipā foreshore area was initiated by the Far North District Council, iwi and the community. Initial concepts include placemaking, improving traffic safety, security and drainage, as well as adding walkways, bollards, tables, plantings and a playground to the area. Two community hui have been conducted to gather feedback on the concepts.
In October, the project design concepts will be further refined before being presented at a hui. Community feedback along with student input will be included in an application for project funding from the government’s Tourism Infrastructure Fund before the end of the year. If funded, it is hoped work can begin on implementing the project in early 2024.
Initial design concepts have been developed by a team of technical specialists from Haigh Workman Engineers, Hawthorn Landscape Architects, and Northland Transportation Alliance.
