Kaitāia Library

There has been a library in Kaitāia since 1882. It was one of the first public libraries in New Zealand. In 2012 the library moved to its current location in Te Ahu where it is situated amongst beautiful artwork in a stunning setting. We have around 25,000 items available to borrow!

The branch is the second largest in the district and includes a café that is run by the Te Ahu Trust , a stylized kauri tree and close connections to the museum, council service desk and iSITE. Te Ahu also contains a cinema and banquet room that are run by the Te Ahu Trust.

Everyone is welcome to come in and read or borrow from our collections, meet friends, use the free computers or enjoy a coffee. We have chess, scrabble, cards and other board games available as well as the local papers.

As the most northern public library in the country, we welcome both local residents and visitors making a last stop before heading to Cape Reinga.

Opening Hours

Saturday - 9:00AM - 1:00PM
