Remission of penalties

We know it can be hard to pay your rates sometimes. We want to help you manage this and will consider requests to lift penalties. This is called “remission” or credit.

Step 1. Check if you are eligible for a remission of rates penalties.

You may be eligible for a credit of penalties if you meet the criteria below.

  • You have a good record of payment, have supplied a reasonable reason for requesting a remission and made an honest attempt to pay on time.
  • You are a new owner who has been given insufficient notice of invoice due date.
  • A request is made on compassionate grounds.
  • You have entered into a Rates Easy Pay Direct Debit agreement and have maintained the arrangement to clear their outstanding rates.

Step 2. Complete an application form

Complete a Penalty Remission Application Form using your rate account number, valuation number and the property location. These can be found on your rates invoice.

Step 3. Submit the application form

  • By post to Far North District Council, Private Bag 752, Kaikohe 0440.
  • Email a scanned copy of your application (along with any supporting documents) to ask.us@fndc.govt.nz.
  • Visit any Far North District Council Service Centre or i-SITE Centre during normal operational hours to pick up a form.

Step 4. What happens next?

It will take approximately 20 working days to process your application.

We will write to let you know the outcome of your application, once it has been processed.
