Both the east and the west coasts of the Far North have vehicle and passengers ferries that form part of the District's transportation network.
The Hokianga ferry, between Rawene and Kohukohu, is operated on behalf of the Far North District Council by Northland Ferries. Northland Ferries also run a vehicle ferry between Opua and Okiato, and a passenger ferry between Paihia and Russell. There are two other operators who also run a passenger ferry between Paihia and Russell - Waitere (the blue ferry) and the Happy Ferry (white).
