Piping progress in Kaikohe water and wastewater upgrades

Work to improve Kaikohe’s water and wastewater network is tracking well with solid progress made on the Stage 1 installation of new sewer and watermain pipes, and Stage 2 and 3 area works set to begin in coming weeks.
The upgrades will improve the reliability of the town’s water supply, reduce wastewater overflows, support firefighting capacity, strengthen the connection to Matawii Dam, and enhance Kaikohe’s water resilience. You can find out about the project here.
Stage 1 works have included Bisset Road, Tawanui Road, Williams Avenue, Ōmāpere Road, Tuhuna Road, Rowsell Heights, and the area behind Purdy Street. Work on these roads is expected to be completed by November 2025.
The installation of manhole chambers and decommissioning of existing pipelines is also included in the upgrades.
Traffic management is in place during the works which are running Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm with occasional Saturday works. Night works are also required from time to time when road crossings or driveways are affected.
Stage 2 and 3 area works include the reticulation line (underground pipes for water and wastewater connections) running from Cumber Road to Wihongi Street, and from Rankin Street to Orrs Road, as well as Recreation Road.
Access to residences and businesses will continue to be maintained. Any changes for specific properties will be communicated well in advance to those impacted.
The Kaikohe water and wastewater infrastructure upgrade is supported by a multi-million-dollar investment from the government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF). IAF funding is being used to upgrade Kaikohe’s reticulation system, and upgrade the Taraire Hills Water Treatment Plant, to enable future housing growth in the town.
The government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund is managed by National Infrastructure Funding and Financing and supports the delivery of critical infrastructure needed to enable new housing in high-growth areas. The government’s investment in Kaikohe and potentially a similar project in Kawakawa is possible through a co-funding partnership with Far North District Council.
