‘Wha’ North eager to celebrate Ranfurly Shield win

Far North Mayor Moko Tepania says Northland’s historic 36-12 Ranfurly Shield win against Canterbury last night is a proud moment for the whole region.

The mayor, who was in Christchurch for a conference and managed to catch the final minutes of the game says the atmosphere among Taniwha supporters was incredible.

“It’s been 48 long years since Northland last captured the Log o’ Wood. The messages of support from around the motu have been incredible and show just how proud people are to see the shield come home.

“To take it from Canterbury on their home turf by a 24-point margin was something special. I’m incredibly proud of the team, and of the people of Northland who have backed them all the way. The Far North has produced some of New Zealand’s greatest rugby players, and last night was another reminder of the talent, determination and heart that comes from the top of the country.”

Mayor Tepania says he is eager to assist Northland Rugby celebrate the win next week.

“I know communities across the Far North will want to show the team how proud they are and thank them for what they’ve achieved. This is a win that belongs to all of Northland. I’d love to see it celebrated across the district, and we’ll be working with Northland Rugby to help make that happen.”
