Night time water outage as Kaikohe water upgrade nears end

Water supplies to Kaikohe will be affected overnight for six hours on Wednesday 17 June due to testing and commissioning required to bring online upgrades to the water treatment plant.

The planned outage will affect water pressure from 10pm to 4am. Residents and businesses are advised to prepare in advance for their overnight water needs as reduced water pressure will affect the amount of water available.

Low pressure to no water should be expected, with the outage planned overnight to minimise the impact on users. Monument Hill reservoir will provide some water pressure to parts of the town but this will vary depending on customers’ proximity to the reservoir.

A water tanker, located at Kaikohe Memorial Hall, will provide an emergency supply of water, free of charge, to those customers who bring their own suitable water containers during the water outage.

The council contractor is directly contacting those who rely on water for their medical needs, as well as large consumers of water such as Kaikohe supermarkets and the Northland Region Corrections Facility.

The nearby settlement of Ngāwhā is not affected by this planned outage.

The temporary outage signals the final stages of a major upgrade to Kaikohe’s water treatment plant. The work will strengthen the town’s resilience to future droughts and includes a new 1.5 million-litre storage reservoir, which will increase the plant’s capacity to store treated water.

The project will also improve the water intakes feeding the treatment plant and enhance the treatment process, helping to deliver a more reliable water supply for the communities of Kaikohe and Ngāwhā.

The upgrade will help prepare Kaikohe’s water network for growth, support firefighting capacity, and deliver long-term benefits for local residents and businesses.
