Safer speeds on the way for Ōkaihau
The safety of pedestrians, cyclists and other road users will be improved following the installation of four new speed humps on Settlers Way in Ōkaihau in the coming days.
Following public consultation held late last year, it was decided to install four speed humps between State Highway 1 and Hulme Drive. The aim is to slow traffic and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and other road users. Permanent concrete speed humps are being installed. These were found to be more durable and better value than temporary rubber speed humps.
The work will be carried out by Ventia on behalf of the council. During construction, Settlers Way will remain open, however temporary lane closures, stop/go traffic management and reduced speed limits will be in place.
Residents are asked not to park within 10m of the work sites between 7am and 6pm while work is underway. Ventia will be delivering information letters to nearby residents and businesses before the work begins.
The work will take around 14 days to complete, weather permitting.
Calls for action to improve safety along Settlers Way intensified following a fatal crash in January 2025, after a young man lost his life when hit by a speeding vehicle. Following the tragedy, the Ōkaihau Community Association lodged a petition seeking measures to improve road safety along the town’s main street.
The council thanks residents, businesses and road users for their patience while these safety improvements are completed.
