Toolkits to help communities build climate resilience

Far North District Council has released a new set of Community Adaptation Toolkits to help communities across Te Hiku o te Ika understand the local impacts of climate change and begin planning for the future.

The toolkits were launched in May and are designed to give community groups practical, easy-to-use resources to explore climate risks in their area, identify local priorities, and start conversations about long-term resilience. Council staff will also be available to support communities using the tools and help tailor the process to local needs.

The initiative is aimed at anyone outside of the Stage One area. The target locations are Awanui, Ahipara, Taipā, Tokerau, Hihi, Te Hiku, Houhora, Kāeo, Waitangi, Paihia, Kerikeri, Matauri, Rangitāne, Purerua, Kokorāreka – Russell. These communities are part of Stage 2 of adaptation planning due to begin in 2027. You can find the planning areas here.

The toolkits are intended to help communities take early steps toward adaptation planning in a way that is collaborative, locally relevant, and community led.

Communities can access both digital and physical versions of the toolkits, including an Intro Toolkit and a Head Start Workshop Toolkit. The resources are designed to strengthen working relationships between community groups and council staff while supporting practical action on climate resilience.

Community groups interested in requesting a toolkit or learning more can email climate.action@fndc.govt.nz.
