Peria Road final sealing now in sight

Sealing of the final section of Peria Road will mark the completion of $20.7 million project for upgrading three key transport routes in the Far North - including Ngāpipito and Ruapekapeka Roads - funded by The Provincial Growth Fund (PGF).

Slip repair and strengthening work to the last of eight bridges on Peria Road will complete a key part of a $20.7 million project to seal three key strategic routes in the Far North.

Strengthening work on the remaining bridge on the Oruru Road-Peria Road-Fairburn Road route in Te Hiku will allow a final section of Peria Road to be sealed.

When costs to strengthen the remaining bridge near Peria School on Oruru Road came in significantly higher than original estimates, further investigation was required, followed by a review of the design. Once pricing of the redesigned work is finalised, work is targeted for completion by the end of October 2022. As well as the bridge upgrade there is a small slip near Wells Road that requires stabilising before this short section of unsealed surface can finally be sealed.

The Provincial Growth Fund (PGF) provided funding for three key transport routes in the Far North in 2020 – Peria, Ngāpipito and Ruapekapeka Roads. Once completed, the project will have sealed 16km of road. These key strategic routes will also be able to carry High Productivity Motor Vehicles (HPMV), which include heavy vehicles above 44,000kg.

Bridges that have undergone strengthening work include:

  • Oruru Road E09 (2724m along Oruru Road near Paranui Road intersection)
  • Oruru Road E23 (7296m along Oruru Road near Garton Road intersection)
  • Peria Road E38 (929m along Peria Road)
  • Peria Road E41 (1205m along Peria Road)
  • Peria Road E74 (5545m along Peria Road)
  • Fairburn Road E66 (5832m along Peria Road)
  • Fairburn Road E67 (3280m along Peria Road)
