Road closures to enable Kaikohe hīkoi

Traffic management will be in place in Kaikohe on Friday 19 September from 9.30am to 1pm to enable a hīkoi celebrating Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. The hīkoi will include parts of the main street of Broadway.

Around 400 school and kōhanga reo children, their parents, and supporters are expected to take part in a hīkoi to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori – Māori Language Week. The students will be marching to showcase the mana (pride) and kotahitanga (unity) of the community.

Route details:

  • The hīkoi will begin at Northland College on Mangakāhia Road
  • It will proceed up to Broadway and continue along the main street
  • Then turn down Raihara Street
  • The event will conclude at Papa Hawaiki Sportsville on Recreation Road before 1pm.

This celebration, Te Hīkoi Whakanui i te Wiki o te Reo Māori, is organised by Te Kura Kaupapa Māori o Kaikohe. Council staff will join the walk to show their support for the kaupapa.
