From library to… What next? Community feedback sought in Kaikohe

We’re asking the Kaikohe community to suggest options on what to do with the current Kaikohe Library building ahead of the opening of the new library site on Broadway.

The new Kaikohe Library and Civic Hub is expected to open in late 2026. When it does, all services will relocate from the Marino Place library site, leaving that library building vacant. The council is now seeking community feedback to help guide its decision on what happens next for the building.

Four options are being considered, and the council is encouraging community members to share why they might support a particular option and suggest ideas for how the space could benefit the wider Kaikohe community. The four options are:

  • keep the building and lease it for commercial or community use
  • keep the building for other council purposes
  • sell the building
  • demolish the building.

It’s important to note, this consultation relates only to the existing library building footprint and does not include surrounding facilities such as the public toilets, car parking, the playground, or green space.

To learn more and share your feedback, visit the have your say page and complete the online survey. Submissions can also be made through the interactive form - growing the centre of Kaikohe community, in person through voting boards at the Kaikohe Library and Mobile Library, by email, or by mail.

Feedback is open until Sunday 31 May 2026.
