Holiday motorists asked to slow down in flood impact areas
Drivers are being warned to be cautious when traveling along State Highway 12 near Whirinaki in the Hokianga, as residents and Civil Defence staff continue the clean up from last week’s storm.
Of particular concern is a stretch of SH12-Twin Coast Discovery Highway near Whirinaki between Jackson Road and Vujcich Road.
There will be frequent truck and other traffic movements on this stretch of highway as clean-up work continues. This may impact the upcoming Easter holiday weekend, with visitors and locals alike advised to drive with caution in flood-affected areas. The council’s emergency response team has updated NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi about the recovery work and asked that warning and speed reduction signs be installed.
All roads and State Highways are open across the Far North, although one-way restrictions remain in place on three district roads – Ōmanaia Road, Waiotemarama Gorge Road, and Waiotehue Road. Meanwhile, Wekaweka Road is open to four-wheel drive vehicles only.
