Kaitāia Airport Upgrade and Resilience Project
In December 2024, Te Arawhiti confirmed a funding package (or funding agreement) of $5.4 million for urgent resilience maintenance works at Kaitāia Airport, matched by $2.4 million from Far North District Council (FNDC). A 35-year lease now secures the airport site, returning the land to Ngāi Takoto, Te Paatu, Patukoraha and Ngāi Tohianga, while FNDC’s council-controlled organisation Far North Holdings Ltd (FNHL) continues to operate and manage the facility. The upgrade programme focuses on runway resurfacing, perimeter fencing, fuel facilities, safety systems and associated civil works.
