Cycle trail detour allows continued use during works

A detour will be in place for a short section of Pou Herenga Tai – Twin Coast Cycle Trail in Kaikohe to bypass construction work that will impact a 700m section of the trail.

From Monday 17 November part of the track will be unavailable for around four weeks, but trail users will be able to reconnect and continue their journey along the cycle trail via a short detour through Kaikohe’s streets. The detour stretches between the State Highway 12 trail entrance in the north and ends at the Station Road entrance in the south.

The detour is required while an upgrade of Kaikohe’s wastewater system is undertaken. The project is funded through the Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF) and that will enable future housing growth in the town. Find out more about the project here.

The track will reopen to allow for full access during the Christmas and New Year holiday season, then close again for three months.

The detour dates are:

  • First detour period – Monday 17 November to Friday 19 December 2025
  • Track reopens - Saturday 20 December 2025 to Sunday 4 January 2026
  • Second detour period – Monday 5 January to Friday 27 March 2026.

Signs informing track users of the detour route will be installed at each end of the closed section – one at the Station Road trail entrance and one at the State Highway 12 trail entrance.

You can download the sign information here.
