Vandalism forces closure of Kaikohe public toilets
An act of senseless vandalism has forced the closure of the public toilets next to Kaikohe Library in Marino Place while Far North District Council staff assess the extent of the damage.
Ceramic fixtures have been smashed, with basins and toilet bowls broken into pieces and scattered across the floor. Plumbing beneath the basins has been damaged and exposed, meaning multiple fixtures will need to be replaced rather than repaired. Once plumbing, labour and materials are factored in, the cost of repairs could be around $17,000.
Vandalism of public facilities limits access to essential services, causes inconvenience for locals and visitors, and places an unnecessary financial burden on ratepayers. Funds that could have been used to improve or upgrade community facilities have to be diverted to repair the damage.
Elsewhere, thetoilets at the Rangitāne boat ramp in Kerikeri remain closed due to a failure with the holding tank. A portable toilet has been installed on site, while a repair date is yet to be confirmed. The council is working with the manufacturer to have the issue addressed under warranty.
FNDC acknowledges the inconvenience these closures may cause and thanks the community for its patience and understanding. Anyone with information about the vandalism is encouraged to contact the council.
