Nominations now open to honour the Far North’s lifetime legends

He karanga tēnei mo ngā taupata Tohu Tutuki o Te Hiku o te Ika

The countdown has begun for the July 2026 Far North District Council Lifetime Achievement Awards — and the search for our next community heroes starts now.

Nominations have opened early, giving everyone across the district the chance to shine a spotlight on the extraordinary locals whose lifelong volunteer efforts have shaped the Far North for the better.

Te Tohu Tutuki – the Far North District Council Lifetime Achievement Award recognises individuals and organisations who have consistently gone above and beyond, dedicating years of service to uplift, protect, and strengthen our communities.

This year’s awards celebrate outstanding contributions across five inspiring categories:

  • positive outcomes for Māori
  • culture and history
  • economic development
  • resilient communities
  • proud, vibrant communities.

If you know someone whose impact has stood the test of time, now is the moment to champion them. You will be asked to describe the nominee’s role, why they deserve recognition, and the lasting legacy of their work.

A panel of Far North District Council elected members will select the recipients. Award winners will be honoured at a special ceremony led by the mayor, where they’ll receive a gift and certificate. Their names will also be etched into local history on the Far North District Council Citizens Awards Honours Board, proudly displayed in the Kaikohe headquarters foyer.

The call is out – if someone in your world is a true Far North star, don’t wait. Nomination forms can be downloaded or collected from any council service centre. Completed forms must be submitted by 5pm, Monday 25 May 2026, either by email to governance@fndc.govt.nzor dropped off in person.

Mark your calendar – the awards ceremony will take place on Tuesday 7 July in the Council Chambers in Kaikohe. It’s set to be a celebration of heart, history, and the people who make the Far North extraordinary.

Tēnā, tukua mai ou taupata
