Ground lease renewed for Kaikohe's Papa Hawaiki

Kaikohe’s multisport complex, Papa Hawaiki, will continue to operate under a new ground lease granted to Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville Incorporated at the end of August’s council meeting.

The lease of the recreation reserve at 36 Recreation Road, Kaikohe was approved for 30 years, split into three 10-year terms. This allows for the sports hub and council to review the lease every decade and make changes if required, ensuring it continues to work well for everyone. Once the new ground lease takes effect, the current Licence to Occupy (LTO) held by Kaikohe Districts Sportsville will end.

Papa Hawaiki, owned by Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville, opened in April 2024 and has already become a valuable community asset. Alongside hosting community events such as Tokihi ki Tua secondary schools regional kapa haka competition, the facility regularly supports a wide range of sports including basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis, netball, and turbo touch.

Consultation on the proposed ground lease ran for four weeks earlier this year from 4 April. The Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board also endorsed the ground lease at their meeting in early August, a decision that was supported by the majority of submissions.

As part of the agreement, Kaikohe and Districts Sportsville remains responsible for maintaining the grounds and covering utilities, rates, and insurance. The organisation has managed Lindvart Park since January 2018 under a management agreement with Far North District Council.
