Northland Waste takes over kerbside recycling in BOI

Northland Waste is stepping in to take over the user-pays kerbside recycling service in and around the Bay of Islands from next Monday (4 August). The company is working on a smooth transfer of the collection service, following the withdrawal of Waste Management’s service on Thursday 31 July.

Northland Waste has released information today for customers regarding the launch of its new kerbside recycling crate service in the Mid North. The crate collection offers yearly, 6-monthly payment and monthly options for customers. Full information about this service can be found on the Northland Waste website. The flyer below gives an overview of the new service. You can sign up for the new service online here.

Collection days for the new recycling service will align with Northland Waste’s current rubbish collection days. More information is available about collections at Find your local collection day | Northland Waste.

As part of this local initiative by the company, it will collect recycling tags and bags with Waste Management branding until Sunday 31 August.

It’s a significant win for the Mid North community, with the replacement service mobilising quickly to ensure minimal disruption to residents. Northland Waste, which is locally owned and operated, already provides a kerbside recycle collection service in the upper Far North.

Additionally, our council does provide a network of 16 refuse transfer stations and 11 community recycling centres, which will continue to be available and free to use for most recycling materials. The only exception is coloured PET (#1) plastics, which can no longer be recycled and must be dropped at centres accepting landfill waste. These plastics will incur the same charges as other landfill.

Northland Waste has committed to supporting the Mid North community by providing this private service to residents, even though this is outside its management contract with the council.

Any queries about the kerbside recycling collection in the Bay of Islands area should be directed to Northland Waste.
