30-year ground lease proposed for Kohukohu Bowling Club

The Far North District Council is seeking feedback on a proposal to grant a new 30-year ground lease, split into three 10-year terms, to Kohukohu Bowling Club.

The lease includes the recreation reserve at 22 Beach Road, Kohukohu, where the club has been based since 1958. Under the Reserves Act, the council must notify the public and seek feedback before making a decision.

Kohukohu Bowling Club has been a part of the local community for over 65 years, with generations of families playing and gathering at the club. Its facilities are also used by a range of local groups, including Hau Ora Hokianga, and are made available free of charge each year to BreastScreen Aotearoa.

In 2023, the club was awarded a medal by the Deputy Chief of the New Zealand Navy in recognition of its long-standing support for Aotearoa’s service men and women, including the hosting of annual Anzac Day and Armistice Day commemorations. With membership continuing to grow, the Kohukohu Bowling Club remains a valued and active part of the community.

Proposed lease terms

The proposed ground lease would be for 30 years, split into three 10-year terms. This allows for the club and council to review the lease every 10 years and decide whether changes are needed, helping to ensure it continues to work well for everyone.
