Help us rethink waste in the Far North

Right now, the council is asking for feedback on two important plans that set the direction for how we deal with waste, not just today, but for the next 25 years.

These plans cover everything from improving recycling and food scrap services, to reducing illegal dumping, investing in community-led circular economy initiatives, and cleaning up old landfill sites. Together, they form a roadmap and a foundation for a cleaner, fairer, low waste future.

"Waste affects all of us, every day.  Whether it’s putting out your weekly rubbish, sorting recycling, or figuring out what to do with food scraps this is a real opportunity for locals to help guide the kind of future we want for our communities and environment," says Roger Ackers, Group Manager Planning and Policy.

What's being proposed?

Solid Waste Strategy (SWS): This is the big-picture plan – a long-term vision that sets the overall direction and goals for how waste will be managed and minimised in the Far North over the next 25 years.

Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP): This action plan focuses on what the council will do now and in the short term. It’s updated every six years and helps unlock central government funding for local waste services.

Both documents have been developed based on earlier feedback from the community and waste sector experts. Now it’s your turn to have a say.
