Floods, slips impact several Far North roads and State Highways

Six roads across the Far North are currently closed due to flooding, a fallen tree and an overslip, as wet weather continues to affect the district.

This morning MetService downgraded its orange weather warning to a Heavy Rain Watch, indicating some improvement in conditions. The Heavy Rain Watch is effective until 6am Wednesday. Far North District Council will continue to follow the situation closely and will provide updates as changes occur.

The most dramatic event occurred this morning, closing Taupo Bay Road at the intersection with State Highway 10 after a farm dam burst sending debris across the road. Crews are clearing the road.

Conditions are easing; however, several routes remain impacted by flooding and other hazards.

Affected roads are:

  • Oruaiti Road, Mangōnui – Flooding
  • Taupō Bay Road – Flooding
  • Trigg Road – Fallen tree
  • Waikare Road – Flooding
  • Waimate North Road – Flooding
  • Waiotemarama Gorge Road – Overslip

Far North District Council is urging residents to take care and avoid affected routes. Residents are encouraged to report any weather-related issues to the council by calling 0800 920 029.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi recently reported flooding on four state highways.

  • SH15 Te Pua - Flood warning, drive to the conditions.
  • SH10 Waipapa - Traffic management is in place due to surface flooding.
  • SH10 Mangonui - Surface flooding present.
  • SH10 Kaeo - Surface flooding present.

Do not drive through flood water. Road conditions can change rapidly — please be prepared for roads to be closed at short notice.
