Progress upgrading Kaikohe’s pipeline systems
A multi-million-dollar upgrade to Kaikohe’s water reticulation system is on track to be completed by the end of March, while wastewater connection upgrades will continue for several more months, through until late 2026.
Upgrading Kaikohe’s two key reticulation systems will enable new housing in the town and improve services.
Contractors are monitoring traffic levels during works and modifying their activity during times of high traffic volumes to ease recent congestion issues. Road users and residents are thanked for their patience and cooperation while this essential work is carried out.
Continuing wastewater works
As work continues on the wastewater pipeline, road users are warned to expect some delays on Mangakahia Road, Recreation Road, Shaw Street, Cumber Rd and at the end of Wihongi Street.
Significant trench work is necessary to upgrade the underground networks, creating patches of broken ground through footpaths or near driveways. As sections of the wastewater upgrade are completed, these areas will be reinstated.
Wihongi pump station
Work on the Wihongi Street pump station is scheduled to begin during March at the end of Wihongi Street. This critical infrastructure connects the town to the wastewater treatment plant on Cumber Road. Care will be required during this work. Please follow onsite directions when travelling in this area.
Funding
The Kaikohe water and wastewater infrastructure upgrade is supported by a multi-million-dollar investment from the government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund (IAF). IAF funding is being used to upgrade Kaikohe’s reticulation system, and upgrade the Taraire Hills Water Treatment Plant, to enable future housing growth in the town.
The government’s Infrastructure Acceleration Fund is managed by National Infrastructure Funding and Financing and supports the delivery of critical infrastructure needed to enable new housing in high-growth areas.
