Floods, slips impact several Far North roads and State Highways
**UPDATE as of 11am Wednesday 8 April**
All but one of eight Far North District roads impacted by yesterday’s severe rain have now reopened, with Waikare Road due to reopen to traffic later this morning.
Most closures were due to flooding and debris, while two district roads were closed by either a fallen tree or slip.
According to the NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi, all state highways in the Far North have also now reopened.
Yesterday’s heavy rains came on the heels of a Red Rain Warning and subsequent State of Emergency declared in the Far North on Thursday 26 March. Numerous homes were severely impacted in Kaitāia, and Hokianga. Support for those affected by that severe weather event is ongoing.
Six roads across the Far North are currently closed due to flooding, a fallen tree and an overslip, as wet weather continues to affect the district.
This morning MetService downgraded its orange weather warning to a Heavy Rain Watch, indicating some improvement in conditions. The Heavy Rain Watch is effective until 6am Wednesday. Far North District Council will continue to follow the situation closely and will provide updates as changes occur.
The most dramatic event occurred this morning, closing Taupo Bay Road at the intersection with State Highway 10 after a farm dam burst sending debris across the road. Crews are clearing the road.
Conditions are easing; however, several routes remain impacted by flooding and other hazards.
Affected roads are:
- Oruaiti Road, Mangōnui – Flooding
- Taupō Bay Road – Flooding
- Trigg Road – Fallen tree
- Waikare Road – Flooding
- Waimate North Road – Flooding
- Waiotemarama Gorge Road – Overslip
Far North District Council is urging residents to take care and avoid affected routes. Residents are encouraged to report any weather-related issues to the council by calling 0800 920 029.
