Framing brings Kaikohe’s community hub into view

Steel framing dominating the skyline on Kaikohe’s main street is the first ‘big reveal’ of a striking facility starting to take shape – the new Kaikohe Library and Civic Hub.

The outline of the new facility on the corner of Broadway and Raihara Street demonstrates the true size of a project that has taken years of planning and community participation to become a reality.

The multi-purpose hub will be a place of learning, connection and creativity for residents throughout the Far North with a wide range of activities for whānau and visitors alike – from library collections, to a creative Maker Space for kids, meeting rooms, a gaming room, a recording booth and a café.

Te Āta Haere, the name given by local hapū for the construction of the hub, began in August 2025 following detailed design approval in early 2025. After months of groundwork constructing foundations, the installation of steel framing is an exciting and very visible milestone for residents.

When framing is completed next month, construction of the roof will continue, with exterior cladding beginning to further define the hub’s form, starting from May. As construction moves upward and outward, interior work will follow, bringing the vision for this important taonga another step closer to reality. The hub is due to be completed later this year.

The $14.6 million project is funded through the council’s Long Term Plan 2024–27 and reflects a long-term investment in Kaikohe’s future.
