Community-led play space Te Amo Pūtoro shines on the national stage

Te Amo Pūtoro, the unique māra hūpara at the Kerikeri Sports Complex, has been named a finalist in the 2026 Parks Awards held by Recreation Aotearoa. The nomination, in the Community Park of the Year category, recognises this innovative space for its strong community benefit, meaningful partnerships, and connections to local culture.

Te Amo Pūtoro means ‘the nurturing house of fun that holds fast to our explorations’. True to its name, this māra hūpara (play space) is far more than a playground – it invites tamariki and whānau of all ages to move, explore and build whanaungatanga in the whenua they call home. By blending play with stories of the area and shapes drawn from local heritage, Te Amo Pūtoro supports wellbeing, belonging and healthy connection for everyone who visits.

It was designed and brought to life by a working group that includes Healthy Families Far North, Te Rūnanga o Te Whaingaroa, Ngāti Rēhia, and the Kerikeri Sports Complex. Supported by Far North District Council (FNDC), the space embodies community-led design and celebrates cultural identity and social connection.

FNDC staff are proud to have played a role in enabling this kaupapa by supporting local leadership, fostering collaboration across organisations, and helping unlock the collective vision of this community.

Since its official opening in October 2025, Te Amo Pūtoro stands as an example of what can be achieved when local voices lead and spaces are designed for rich cultural connection, play and inclusion.

Being recognised as a finalist in the nationwide awards highlights the value of Te Amo Pūtoro to the community.
