Kaikohe's Memorial Park shaped by play and community

The council is working to develop a Reserve Management Plan for Memorial Park in Kaikohe. This plan will guide how the park is looked after and used in the future, making sure it reflects the community’s values and aspirations.

Memorial Park is a valued gathering place for our community, with a history that includes significant events and historic conflicts. The park offers places to play, exercise, relax, and connect with others. In 2023, the park received a major upgrade, with new sports and play areas, and artwork that celebrates Kaikohe’s culture and history.

Before drafting the plan, we want to hear from you – the people who use the park and the wider Kaikohe community. We’d love to hear what you enjoy about the park and what the park means to you. Your feedback will help us create a draft plan that reflects the community’s hopes and ideas for the park too. Once the reserve management plan has been written, there will be further opportunity to comment on the draft plan.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The council is in the process of writing individual reserve management plans for the district’s larger, well used reserves.  As part of this work, each community board was asked to choose one reserve in their area to have its own detailed management plan. On 19 July 2024, the Kaikohe-Hokianga Community Board chose Memorial Park in Kaikohe.

A Reserve Management Plan is a document that sets out how a public reserve will be looked after and used in the future. It’s created under the Reserves Act 1977 and includes goals and guidelines for protecting, maintaining, and developing the reserve.

The plan helps to make sure the reserve is used and cared for in a way that suits its purpose. It also guides council staff in making everyday decisions and planning for the long term.

Importantly, the process includes public consultation so that the community’s needs and ideas are taken into consideration. You can view the existing reserve management plans across the Far North district here.

We are currently in phase one of the Reserve Management Plan below. We will keep this page updated as the plan progresses.

Step 1: Public notice is given of the council’s intention to prepare a management plan for Kaikohe’s Memorial Park and people are invited to provide suggestions for the plan (at least one month consultation).

Note: Anyone is invited to submit feedback on this consultation, whether as an individual or on behalf of an organisation, however, any submissions that are out of scope, offensive, inappropriate, or late may not be accepted by the council. You will be notified if your decision is not accepted and, where appropriate, invited to resubmit.

Any submissions that are made will become part of the public consultation process. The collection and use of personal information by the Far North District Council is regulated by the Privacy Act 2020. Please note that your submission or a summary of your submission will be treated as public information and may be published on the council's website and made available to elected members and members of the public as part of the consultation process. Your name and contact details (address, phone number, email) will only be used for administrative purposes - such as the council contacting you to update you on the outcome of this consultation and letting you know about future consultations
