Copthorne Bay of Islands Far North Rally returns for 2022

Tomorrow night marks the opening of the Copthorne Bay of Islands Far North Rally with a welcome ceremony with iwi and council from 7pm at the resort in Waitangi.

Tomorrow night marks the opening of the Copthorne Bay of Islands Far North Rally with a welcome ceremony with iwi and council from 7pm at the resort in Waitangi.

The rally, which is supported by council, departs the carpark on Williams Road in Paihia on Saturday 2 July at 7am with four special stages south of Mangōnui and Taipā.

The gravel roads of the Far North present competitors, crews, and spectators with a combination of twisty, tight, heavily cambered country roads that provide fast, open, and flowing stages.

A sixty-minute service and lunch break sponsored by the council in Kaitāia from 11:30am will include kai and coffee trucks, a hangi and market stalls. Four further afternoon stages around Peria, Mangamuka and Oromāhoe will bring the cars back to the Copthorne Hotel and Resort, Waitangi around 4pm for the rally finish.

It is the first time in two years that the Far North Rally has been held due to COVID-19 restrictions. Race organisers say the event brings significant benefits to Te Tai Tokerau with 1200 bed nights and approximately $270,000 injected into the local economy.

Full details of the event can be found here.
