Water Supply Update - drought conditions intensify - Week beginning 15 March 2010
Prohibited water uses have been declared in Kaitaia, Opononi, Omapere, Kawakawa, Moerewa and Rawene as drought conditions intensify in the Far North. From Monday March 15 prohibited activities in these communities are: commercial car washing facilities, truck washing facilities, waterblasting, watering lawns and gardens (except with grey water), washing private cars, windows, houses, decks and pathways with anything other than a bucket and filling, re-fillling or topping up swimming and spa pools. The Awanui River level is so low that the council cannot take enough water from it to meet Kaitaia’s water demands. It is essential that people cut their water use by 20%. Those who keep doing prohibited activities may have their water supply restricted by the council or be liable for a fine of up to $20,000 upon conviction.
