Proposed district plan

The council is reviewing the current District Plan. This is the set of rules that control where you can undertake certain activities, and how land can be used, developed and subdivided. The District Plan affects all landowners and residents in the Far North.

On the 11 June 2026 the Far North District Council approved the release of its decisions on submissions to the Proposed District Plan (PDP), marking a significant milestone in the development of the district’s land use planning framework.

The council’s decisions on submissions will be formally notified on Tuesday 30 June 2026. This is an important step in the statutory process and signals the beginning of the appeal period, where submitters have the opportunity to appeal decisions made.

Importantly, there will be no change to how planning rules are applied or how applications are assessed between now and 30 June 2026. Both the PDP and Operative Far North District Plan 2009 (ODP) continue to be treated in the same way as they did before the council made its decision.

You can view the notified version of the Proposed District Plan here. You can also go to the Council meetings page if you would like further information relating to the 11 June Extraordinary Council meeting.

The website will be updated on the 30 June with the latest information and access to the Proposed District Plan decisions version.
