Road seal for seven, high-priority roads
Seven, high-priority roads across the Far North will be sealed over the next three years to combat dust on roads.
The Council will spend $6.17 million over the next three years sealing sections of seven, high-priority roads across the Far North.
In total, 11.48km of road will be sealed by 2024 under the Council’s unsubsidised Priority Seal Extensions Programme. This programme is entirely funded by the Council and was launched in 2019 to combat dust on roads that do not attract funding subsidies from Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency because they have not met its strict criteria. The seven roads to be sealed (see table below) were selected by the Northland Transportation Alliance using a dust prioritisation matrix first developed in 2019. This ranks individual roads based on criteria such as traffic volumes, the number of residents on each road, the presence of schools, marae and other community facilities, as well as dust levels.
The road selection was endorsed by the Council’s Infrastructure Committee in July. Deputy Mayor Ann Court says the funding demonstrates the Council’s commitment to tackling road dust and supporting Far North residents.
“We are grateful for Waka Kotahi’s funding assistance to seal our road network. However, where that assistance is not available, the Council must step up to support our residents seriously impacted by road dust. The Priority Seal Extensions Programme allows us to do that.”
She says using the Dust Prioritisation Matrix to select roads to be sealed takes the politics out of road sealing decisions and makes road selection transparent and fair across the whole district.
