Despite clearer skies around much of the district today, more roads have been hit by slips and fallen trees.

Despite clearer skies around much of the district today, more roads have been hit by slips and fallen trees. As of 4pm today, 17 roads are down to one lane or have traffic restrictions. Three roads remain closed.

This afternoon a significant slip blocked much of Kaitaia-Awaroa Road while another slip and fallen tree has closed Whangae Road near Kawakawa. That road is expected to reopen by nightfall tonight. A full list of Far North district roads still affected by the severe weather is below.

Three district roads in the Far North remain closed as of midday today, with one road not due to reopen for days. Contractors estimate it will take two days to clear debris from an overslip on Waiaua Road, while a another overslip on Kohumaru Road should be cleared today. Downed power lines have made it difficult to access a slip on Kohumaru Road, the third road that remains closed today. No timeframe has yet been given for it to be cleared.

A further 11 roads are restricted to one lane or are passable with caution with slips and washouts now the cause for the traffic restrictions. All fallen trees have now been cleared.

A total of 25 Far North district roads have been impacted by severe weather that hit Northland over the past two days. Of those five remain closed to traffic and another eight are down to one lane or are passable with caution. Contractors are working to have roads reopened as quickly as possible and will be assessing sites affected by slips while there is a break in the rain. Between Sunday and early this morning, parts of the Far North received well over 100mm of rain, with Kaeo and Ōtiria both receiving 143.5mm. Meanwhile, at Touwai at Weta (coastal Kaeo – Whangaroa) received 176.5mm.
