Emergency Management Minister Kieran McAnulty witnessed first-hand last week damage to Far North roads caused by torrential rains that lashed much of the country in August. The minister extended a planned visit to the Far North to view the damage following local lobbying. His helicopter tour of the district’s worst affected roads was featured on 1 News on Thursday night. The item by Northland reporter Helen Castles included footage of the Minister being flown over multiple slips that have closed State Highway 1 at Mangamuka Gorge. He also saw slip damage that has closed West Coast Road between Panguru and Kohukohu leaving several North Hokianga communities almost completely isolated.
