Whatuwhiwhi Wastewater Treatment Plant
Plant overview
The Whatuwhiwhi wastewater treatment plant is located approximately 1 kilometre northwest of Whatuwhiwhi on the Karikari peninsula. The plant serves the townships of Tokerau beach as well as Whatuwhiwhi. Being a beach side community, the population of Whatuwhiwhi varies considerably. Populations are higher during the summer, peaking over the Christmas period. The plant currently serves a winter population of approximately 450 and a summer population of up to 1,500.
Treating the wastewater
The wastewater from the communities of Whatuwhiwhi and Tokerau Beach is pumped to the wastewater treatment plant. Initial treatment begins where inorganic solids are screened from the wastewater through an automatic stepscreen for landfill disposal. The wastewater is then treated in two aerobic ponds fitted with “Aquamats” to promote high treatment standards. The wastewater is then treated through a UV disinfection system before it is discharged into the adjacent wetland area.
Monitoring and Compliance
The discharges from the treatment plant are authorised by a resource consent. The resource consent sets out certain conditions, such as the requirement to regularly monitor the treated wastewater. You can read a copy of the resource consent here.
