Major stormwater project reduces flooding risks
After months of often complex work, new stormwater pipelines have been installed and nearly all pavements reinstated in a major project to reduce flooding risk in central Kaitāia.
Since July, Far North District Council contractor Far North Roading has been upgrading the stormwater pipeline along a stretch of Taaffe Street and down the length of West Lane. West Lane acts as a service road for businesses facing onto Commerce Street.
The project involved deep excavations to remove ageing stormwater pipes, install larger pipes and improve the performance of the network during significant rainfall.
Far North District Council's Head of Infrastructure Transition, Tanya Proctor, said the project would provide long-term benefits for the town centre.
"A huge thank you to local businesses, residents and visitors for your patience during the work. Your support has helped us deliver a successful project to reduce long-term flooding risk in the area.”
As this project draws to a close, the council is also planning further stormwater improvements in East Lane, to reduce the likelihood and severity of localised flooding on parts of that road.
